The Year of the Cargo Bike

In Netherlands nobody really wears helmets, but in the USA, it is requred by law for children. This poses some problems, when little heads don't fit a helmet yet, or when the helmet acts as lead weight while napping...

I get asked a lot about what to do when babies are too little to fit in a bike helmet, or if kids need to wear them, and to what age? Parents here in the USA have to figure out ways to ride with their little kids, in the way that works best for the age of the kids, and the bike they are riding on. I love this comparision of baby seats, helmet wearing while sleeping, and the various ways kids can ride/sleep on bikes from one of my favorite family bike blogs, Totcycle.

The Gazelle Cabby (Pictured Above) actually has seat mounts for infant carriers, which is a plus for families!

The Bullitt (seen in the Totcycle Article and our previous post earlier in the week) is another great bicycle for riding with kids on the front. Some others would be any of the Bakfiet type bikes, like the ones detailed this month in a multi-page spread in Bicycling Magazine. Do pick up a copy of it while it is in stores and read all about Cargo Bikes, it's the first time Bicycling has ever featured them before! The article is not online, but in print only...but I will scan and post it soon!

Custom Headset Cup Remover

To remove the head set cups on a Box Style Cargo Bike or Front Loader Cargo Bike, can be difficult to find a tool long enough to cover the span of the headset. Here is a solution if you are able to weld or have access to it.

We took a Basic RT-1 headset Cup remover and Cut it in Half

We took a 3/4 inch mild steel tubing the same diameter of the Park tool and cut it to 28 inches

We then added two 2" x 5/8" mild steel tubing and inserted them on each side an inch deep with an inch exposed to keep alignment with little movement when we weld.

Here it is, and extended Park RT-1 - Welded and works like a charm.

Even more reasons to ride an Electric Cargo Bike! Many people buy bikes but realize their bikes are ill equipped for the terrain in their neighborhoods. If you live in an area of steep hills, lugging even a few bags of groceries home on a 3 speed is not going to work well. Gazelle Cabby Project Part 1

This customer loves their Gazelle Cabby. They wanted it electrified. Problem was that Dutch Bikes have roller brakes. There are no hub motors available, except for the Gazelle Hub Motor which is why we welded a disk brake mount to the fork to electrify the bike.

We welded the fork here.

We modified a Gazelle Cabby Cargo Bike to Electric as a custom project. They don't normally come this way. It involved modifying the fork on the Cabby. We installed an Electric Battery System on the bike, and concealed it beneath the bench seat. Now our clients are using their Cargo Bike instead of their car, and making it up short steeper hills that otherwise would have been difficult without electric due to the weight of the Cabby. I guess it is geared towards customers who want to ride a bike more than just around the block before they are sold, or in some cases around inside the store.

Local Write-up on one of our bikes we carry - A Madsen Cargo Bike in Temecula

The Madsen ridden is one of the bikes we carry. We are happy to see cargo bikes getting a bit of local press! The electric hub system installed here in not one I am familiar with. It's a rear drive hub motor, and I have not seen a side mounted battery on a Madsen until now. A rear drive gives more torque with the 20" rear, but you would have more speed with a 26" front drive installed.

Basic Safety Check
Before hopping on an old bike that's been stored away for the winter, perform an ABC quick check.

A Is for Air
If your tires aren't full, biking is more difficult. On the side wall of each tire you'll find a number that tells you how much air your tire needs. Use a tire pump to make sure the pressure is within that range, and add or release air as needed. If you have a bike pump with a gauge, you can see how much air you are adding; if your pump does not have a gauge, fill the tire until it is rock hard.

B Is for Brakes
Squeeze your brake lever. You should be able to fit your thumb in between the brake lever and the handlebar. If the brake touches the handlebars, it needs to be adjusted and tightened. Take your bike into a bike shop for a quick adjustment.

C Is for Chain
Make sure your bicycle chain is lubed up and working efficiently. To lubricate the chain, rotate the pedal and squeeze lube onto the chain as it moves, wiping with a cloth. Do this approximately every 100 miles to prolong the life of your chain.

Adjusting the Seat
The bicycle seat should be at a height where when your foot reaches the top of the pedal stroke, your thigh is level. Never raise the seat so high that when at the bottom of the pedal stroke, your leg is locked; you always want a slight bend in the knee.

Bicycle Safety
Ride your bike as if you are behind the wheel of a car, and always ride with the flow of traffic. Be predictable and signal when you are turning by pointing in the direction that you are going. And always use lights at night.

Rules of the Road, and why a cyclist is considered a slow moving vehicle?

These are additional bike-related facts from California traffic law that are largely unknown to motorists,and some cyclists:

Cyclists may ride in the middle of a lane as long as their speed does not impede traffic flow.
To avoid the "door zone"—the space occupied by an open door from a vehicle parked curbside—cyclists must ride three feet from parked cars.
Riding side-by-side, also called "two abreast," instead of in a more lane-space-efficient single file line is legal if there is more than one lane in the direction in which the cyclists are traveling that motorists can use to pass on the left.
A cyclist is impeding traffic if followed by five or more motor vehicles. The law requires a turnout to the right in such an instance.
Cyclists in crosswalks are a very gray area and for the most part left to an individual officer's judgment as to whether a citable offense has occurred.
Traveling the wrong way on a street is never legal for a bike rider, but it is sometimes permissible when riding on the sidewalk, which cyclists are allowed to do.

There is a mountain bike ride today at cook's corners to raise money for Project Rwanda, a charity which give bicycles to poor people in Africa, raising them to a basic standard of living, where they can provide for their own basic needs, achieving some independence.

In the beginning, when a few friends got together for a casual bike ride across Iowa in 1973, no one imagined that a tradition would be born, let alone that it would become the longest, largest and oldest bicycle touring event in the world. Some of the things that make it easier to be a bike friendly city are good bike lanes, bike parking, and cycle bridges over freeways and busy roads. If you were to live within ten miles of everything you needed so you could bike, what things are right now too far to get to? What would make it possible for you to bike around, instead of drive? The OC register just reported that drivers waste approximately 60 hours of time sitting in traffic every week. "That works out to $1,464 per commuter, based on the 63 hours and average of 50 gallons of gasoline each wasted sitting in traffic, the study said."
Imagine that, paying out more than you make in a week of work, to sit in a traffic jam. Maybe people will re-think where they commute to, or why they end up in traffic, and find ways to save.

We're open post Gathering of the Tribes until 5pm if you care to stop by today. It was a really fun day for everyone at icargobike down at Church. We were happy many people took us up on the free demo rides on the Kona Ute.

It was mighty chilly today down at Church, and I want to thank the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association for allowing us to participate today! Everyone had such a great spirit there, and it just felt nice to be down there watching the contestants surf, and seeing my daughter have fun cartwheelin in the sand. I had the honor of rolling hundreds of breakfast burritos, with help, which I must say I am pretty speedy at doing!

The DLSA is a great organization to donate to, since they keep our local beach clean, sponsor events, feed people at the events, in addition to raising money for local causes, and scholarships for local kids. It's a nice group of people too!

We enjoyed being a part of it, and are looking forward to more future events like this!

Congratulations to everybody who surfed in the chilly windy waves today!

That was an awesome tandem contest we got to see too. the ITSA Tandem , now my daughter wants to do it too, I saw some of the best teams I have seen yet. We tried doing some of our own moves, and realized its no easy task to get someone up in the air , let alone on a board, well done tandem surfers!

What a great bike ride from Southwest San Clemente to Church and back too, as always!

Today my husband rode the Yuba Mundo fully loaded to the max this time with two surfboards, a boogie board, three wetsuits, a bunch of beach towels, a large thermos, a cooler, and my daughter riding on the back with the holds ons and soft spot seat. The Yuba Bag kept everything secure the whole way. It's nice that its adjustable, so your stuff does not rattle around while your riding.

I rode the Kona Ute. I have to say, I love this bike! The pedal assist electric system makes it a breeze to get up hills, and just about anywhere. The computer is also helpful, so if you start clocking yourself at 30, you know its time to slow down a bit. It was nice so many people had a chance to test ride it today down at Trestles too!

San Clemente to Dana Point via PCH

Rode the Yuba Mundo with my daughter in tow on my personal Yuba Mundo Custom Electric Bike. I love how versatile this bike can be. The super heavy duty racks are very easily customizable to haul just about anything, or anybody for that matter. It was a beautiful post rain day, and a bit nippy, at 58-60 degrees, which is perfect bike weather. That's what bike gloves are for. I am set on getting a nice wooly pair, with rubber grippy palms, and no fingers from Ibex, soo perhaps. So we started our journey by taking the marked the bike route down Ola Vista from Southwest San Clemente, right through the heart of town, across Del Mar. We made a pit stop at Icons of Surf to see the latest boards in stock. That McCallum spoon on display is beatifully crafted, as it is technical, and at $2500, I'm not sure I am ready for it yet. I saw a myriad array of colors of Bing Noseriders, Gato Heroi, and pretty much every good local shaper is represented here, you simply cannot go wrong. It's one of the few surf shop's that you can be assured you will find the noserider of your dreams, your first time there.

We continued on to Las Palmas Playground for a quick roll in the sand, before hitting the bike path again, which meander's through the neighborhood of North Beach, passing the train station, Ole Hanson Pool, another beachfront playground, and Jim Van Nuys Bike Rental (open fri, sat, sun). Jim is an orange county bike fanatic and all around nice guy. If you are visiting , stop by, rent a bike and explore our lovely town. We cut over across PCH to the Semi Class 1 Bike path, where you are protected from cars by concrete medians for a short while, before you have to cross traffic at Camino Capistrano to the other side of the street, where it continues. I take it the recent landslides, and ongoing erosion to the bluffs, is why the path has to cross the street at this point. Again, you have a concrete median between you and traffic, which is great for riding safely with kids. There were alot of em, out with their parents, enjoying the nice weather. People stopped to snap our photos a few times, since a cargo bike is still rare in these parts, its just not something you see everyday in Orange County, and we hope that will soon change!

The Path cuts over through Doheny State Beach at the Railroad Crossing, where the path narrows, then dissappears as you bike through a parking lot, and the campground, before ending up at Dana Point Harbor, and Doheny Park Rd. You have a few choices here, brave the no bikes sign, and cross into the Harbo Parking lot, to ride along the shoreline, or take the path along the road which dead ends at the Ocean Institute, where we were headed on this particular day. We choice to just follow the other cyclists past the no bikes sign, and ride the shoreline, rebels we are. We sort of regretted it when we were riding extremely slow due to all the people on the path there, so we diverted back to the marked bike path. We had alot of fun exploring the tidepools there at low tide, and climbing on the giant rock, which you can access when tides are super low. It was a nice free outing, and cost $0.00 9/10 in gas, and $0 in admission prices.

We rode on back as the sun was setting beautifully over the harbor, just in time to stop one more time at the playground in North Beach, all in all a nice day, and fun ride to take the kids on, especially on a cargo bike!

How much can I save if I bike locally instead of taking my car?

Where I lived previously, subways were the norm for my daily commute, along with my own two feet. I never even considered getting a car, or my carbon footprint, and I didn't even have a clue what that was. Had I been asked, I might have thought it had something to do with my feet.

Our carbon footprint is how much emissions (pollution) are released into earth's atmosphere by our daily activities, direct (Ex. driving), or indirect (Ex. buying non-local produce). That same carbon that may possibly be melting polar bears homes, shrinking greenland's ice cap, causing massive die-off of many species of amphibians, and causing increasingly violent atmospheric conditions, such as the East Coast Blizzard. Oh, and the west coast one too, at the same time, very odd! Even if you live off grid, grow your own food, and use firewood for fuel, you still have a carbon footprint. There is really no escaping having one in the modern world. How large a footprint you have is up to you. Some, very few of us, today may match the carbon footprints of early settlers, and Native Americans. You probably will not fit this mold. You will likely find those people tending to a homestead somewhere remote.

Most of us in Orange County commute, have to commute, and have no choice really in the matter. What most people think about when commuting is not only how long it takes to get there via a particular route, but the money they have to spend to get there. Trains, planes, automobiles, and bikes each exude an influence on our carbon footprints. If you have the money to bypass 405 freeway hell and take the 73 going to north county at rush hour you probably will. So some of us commute for an hour or two in traffic to work. Cycling is probably not an option in these cases. But when we are home, there are so many little car trips we take, that if we really thought about it more in advance, and planned a little, could be accomplished by bike, thus reducing our carbon footprints drastically.

Taking a train, or a plane to the east coast from the west coast of the USA is like night, and day in terms of carbon footprints. Planes use much more fuel, and cause much more pollution than trains, not to mention we now have to get body scanned or have a full body search, ugggh! I've taken five train journeys east to west, and I have even more the reason to continue this trend. The same goes for cycling, versus driving, in terms of your carbon footprint. You have none, when you bike!

These days most people are trying to stretch the dollars in their wallet further than ever before, if they even have dollars in their wallet. Riding your bike, gets you to a place for free, and reduces your carbon footprint. Would you rather pay $0.00 9/10 to get 15-20 miles, or $3.95 9/10, and do it over, and over again. Imagine all your little car trips every week, which probably add up to this. Put that $16 in a savings account for the kids, and over a year, that's

$4 x 52 = $208 saved, and probably 10 lbs lost, good deal!

San Clemente to Sano Surfin Beach Ride

We loaded up the usual gear today on our cargo bikes, a Madsen Bucket, and a Yuba Mundo 21 speed for a trip down the bike trail to Sano Surf Beach, just south of where we live. It was a bit chilly for southern california, about 56 degrees, but a perfect day for biking. We just had a few monstrous rainstorms blow through, so we knew the water would be less than pristine, still we had to do something, it's our staycation. We took our 9'8 Peck, and a 6'10 Fineline Hull, so we would have a little variety.
We stopped at our neighbor Stewarts Surf Shop, and came out with a brand new boogie board, and a fresh bar of wax.

Somebody brought their guitar, wonders never cease with a cargo bike!

My daughter, my wife, and myself took at long weekend trip to Santa Barbara, and did a fully loaded test run to El Cap for a family surf.

A few surfboards, a picnic lunch, three wesuits, towels, camera, thermos of hot tea, two passengers, and a rider for the trip down.

We took the Madsen for a spin to get a tree, it worked well. We took the Yuba as well, so we'd have choices, since both bikes would haul a Christmas tree no problem, happy holidays blogosphere!

Benjamin Sarrazin, founder of Yuba Bicycles, delivered 544lbs of food to the San Francisco Food Bank, handily winning first place overall in the Supermarket Street Sweep competition last weekend. Benjamin Sarrazin, riding a stock Yuba Mundo, delivered 8% of the 6,920lbs of the food donated by the 171 riders in the event. "This is more than you would usually want to haul around town, but the Mundo performed fine", said Sarrazin. Other Mundo riders in the race were carrying lesser loads. "You hardly notice a load of a few hundred pounds on the back of a Mundo", said Steve Bode, riding a Mundo loaded with bags of rice and canned goods.

The 5^th annual Supermarket Street Sweep is a grass roots event organized by a few dedicated bicycling enthusiasts in San Francisco who feel like doing something for the community. The race is a kind of scavenger hunt where participants ride their bikes around San Francisco collecting food items from different merchants and delivering them back to the San Francisco Food Bank. The riders completing the course in the shortest time or with the greatest load are the winners. Similar events have been organized in cities all over the country, often referred to as "Cranksgiving" events.

This weekend is the LA River Ride, so if your in the LA area, it's alot of fun to take your kids on the family ride which is only 15 miles. You ride along the river on a paved bike path, with your kids. They can ride on their bikes, or on yours, a box bike is prefferred.

A Flying Pigeon Box Bike in action!

The Flying Pigeon is a lightweight kind of box bike, made in China, and now sold in the US. They can be upgraded with nice components, like the one shown here.

A family friendly bike race just took place, called Bike the Coast, where anyone and everyone can participate, so if you did not participate this year, plan on joining in the fun next year! Road bikes, mountain bikes, and cargo bikes were all being ridden, and we can't wait until next year!

The way they incorporated the extra large battery under the cargo rack is ingenious in our opinion. Interbike Convention

A few words on interbike...we just returned from our first Interbike convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. It's really something to see, and we must have walked 15 miles in three days, checking out the latest gear. Every major bicycle manufacturer was there, except for Kona. We saw many new bikes we will be carrying in the shop soon...dutch styled, box bikes, english bikes, chinese bargain priced bikes, electric bikes, cargo trailers, and a stroller which turns into a bike...with so many bikes out there, we really had to go with the ones which are proven. Here is just a few I liked...

Some bikes we saw at Interbike...

Shown above, the "Kids Tandem", a company based in Boulder, Colorodo. These are very functional cargo, and tandem bikes. My daughter hopped on, and proceeded to pedal for quite awhile, and she would have kept pedalling, sold! That's what it's all about right, getting out there, biking with our kids, and hauling our cargo too, at least for me it is! So that's why we were there, to see up close all the bikes that are a good fit for our store. This in one I hope to have soon, the Kids Tandem. I can order one of these right now, if your in the market for one.

The Buddy Bike is designed for kids with special needs, with extra long handlebars, surrounding your child in the front, where they have their own handlebars to hold onto. It's on of the few bikes designed with these special passengers in mind, who deserve to get out into the world, but normally could not on a regular bike or tandem. We can order one for you right now, if this is what you need, but we don't have them in stock yet.

Yes, they are not your typical cargo or dutch bike, but they definitely serve a purpose, and get you where you need to go, with your extra passengers.

I love Dutch bikes because not only are they stylish, but they are made to last a hundred years, and never rust in the rain. The Dutch literally live in their bikes. There is nothing as amusing, to me at least, as watching a video of bike traffic in the Netherlands. All sorts of stylish bikes, and riders, with cute bags, baskets, and briefcases commuting to and fro. It makes you think of your childhood in america, riding your bike around your neighborhood with your friends, or to school, but they are adults, doing it everyday. I love watching this video, it inspires me as a bike shop owner, and gives a reason for doing all that we're doing, promoting a more cycling friendly lifestyle in Orange County. One reason you might want to bike it financial, you save money, another is lifestyle, since you have a healthier one because of it. With our wonderful climate here in San Clemente, there is only a few days of the year, that you might not want to be biking, monsoon week in January/February, and of course, yesterday, when it hit a record temp of 103. You have to work up to biking in temps like that ok? When we were driving home from Interbike, we speeded by a Cargo biker, likely leaving Interbike, and I really wanted to stop and chat with him, and congratulate him on being crazy enough to bike across the Mojave solo. No doubt you are a pro if you attempt to ride across it in the midday sun, alone. I went biking for about 10 minutes the other day when it was 103 in a "black" helmet, the kind that turns your head into an oven soaking up every precious ray, is what it felt like. I parked my bike, and headed inside for some iced green tea, and it never tasted as good as it did yesterday. Our store was nice and cool though, since our building has automatic air conditioning, and we debated just sleeping there versus our house which seemed hotter inside than out. Time to break out that solar cooker!

Hello Everyone,

Our shop/showroom is now open Fri-Sun 12-6pm.

We will expand our hours as needed. These hours give us time to work on bike demos, and product development, as well as the e-commerce side of our business.

However, we do make appointments to accommodate those who cannot make it to the store during those hours, during the rest of the week, if at all possible.

So stop on by this weekend or next, and we are planning some demo rides, possibly Sunday morning's, so check back often for times.

Bakfiet Bicycles will be ready for purchase at icargobike, this weekend, two black, and one baby blue. These are the ones with the cool wood boxes in the front, which work great on hills, and are available with the electric assist package. We have had alot of requests on these, and up until now, have just had the demo bike at the shop, for test rides.

Can you carry a longboard or shortboard on these?

Alot of people have been asking about surfboard carrying on our cargo bikes. Though most of our bikes have the potential to be fitted with any of the already available surfboard carriers, carver, wheelie, or that of your own creation, our cargo bikes have the added distinction of not even needing racks at all in some cases.

For instance, we are soon going to have in the Kona Ute, also available as an electric bike, and a likely beach gear carrying candidate.

Here, by the way, is a real world example of a cargo biker, a Stand up Paddleboarder for that matter (SUP), using his cargo bike to get to and from the beach. Alot of people ask about us getting in a SUP Board trailer, or carrier. Here is someone carrying their SUP board to the beach, with tie downs, and a beach towel. So, I suppose simply it's up to your imagination, how you get your board down to the beach in the way which works for you, though we can make no claim that your way is the "right" way, it's your call.

You may have seen our prototype Madsen surfboard carrying bike around town already. This bike is ideally suited for our custom rack we designed for it, with the wide girth of the bucket, which gives ample room to pedal.

Here's the proof, that people are carrying surfboards on their cargo bikes already, from a cargo biker in Victoria, Australia.

Whether you decide to do it to, is entirely up to you. If you have ever seen a picture of a cargo biker in China, or Africa, or any other third world country, you would not be so surprised that a giant SUP board could possibly be carried in this manner!

Wired magazine tends to only write an article about something if its cutting edge, and in August 2009, they have decided to write about the Bullitt Bike, from Danish bike builders Larry Vs Harry, which is one of the models we will be carrying in our new store. We plan to have the bikes in around the time of our grand opening. We will have three, but two are so far unaccounted for. we will have the Bluebird and the TNT models (shown above).

We are in the process of building our new Cargo Bike Store in the small surf town of San Clemente, the first of its kind in Orange County, CA. Southern California is the epitome of car culture, be it lowriders, hotrods, range rovers, or a toyota truck with a surfboard in the back, everyone drives. Cars signify things to certain people, about their personalities, but they all have one thing in common, they're cars. Every car has the same high initial out of pocket expenses, maitenance costs, insurance costs, registration costs, parking, tolls, and don't forget gas, which not only costs us moneywise. Gasoline combustion pollutes the air we breathe, and may cause rapid climate change in the near future. Take one look at the Gulf, and there was never a better time to seek out alternative transportation options.

In Amsterdam, for over a hundred years the Dutch have been making solid, sturdy, cargo carrying bikes, used not simply for recreation, but transportation, and carrying heavy loads to work. Merchants would literally "peddle" their wares to the market, hence the term came to be. Nowadays, when we think about bicycles, we imagine summer days, a lazy trip around the neighborhood riding our beach cruiser in flip flops, or maybe racing bikes down PCH, or mountain biking in a Wilderness park canyon, or maybe we ride to work. Rarely do we imagine hauling all our groceries home on a bike, with the kids in tow, or doing our big shopping trip errands via bike, especially to a place like the building supply store. If we have young kids that need to wind down, we go for a car ride, as the bumpy road puts them to sleep.

WHat started in Amsterdam over a hundred years ago, never really stopped. In Amsterdam, there are more bikes on the road than cars. There is a fully developed bike culture, versus a car culture. Environmentally, they are years ahead of any city in the US, except for cities which are leaders in the Cycling and Cargo Biking movement, such as Portland, Oregon. This is one city where people bike, rain or shine, and it rains alot! If they can do it you can do it right? Well, like Amsterdam, Portland is very flat terrain, which lends itself to bike culture. The Pacific Northwest cities are readily embracing biking versus the car, for local travel. There is such a large number of environmentally concious people living in this area, that some, never drive a car, and only bike, every single day. This is very inspiring to us, and was part of the reason we were called to open our store, icargobike, in San Clemente. There are many other bike friendly cities springing up within the US: Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, New York City, San Francisco, Davis, CA, Seattle, and Vancouver, WA, but Southern California, still lags behind in terms of the number of bike riders versus drivers. City planning is definately to blame, since a lack of consistent public transit, and light rail leaves few options for those with a longer commute. Widely spaced subdivisions, shopping malls, and neighborboods in some area, with hilly terrain, would make some cyclists not even attempt to trade their car for a bike. Just any bike might not pass the test. A road, mountain, beach crusier, or hybrid bike will not carry a heavy load of shopping bags along with extra passengers safely, and how can you replace a car, for a family of four? With cargo biking, Portland families are already trading in cars for bike because cargo bikes can handle the load, unlike a bike, designed mainly for recreation, or speed can. The invent of the electric hub motor changed everything for cargo bikers. Suddenly, longer trips by bike, were cut in half in terms of time, and if there is traffic, the electric cargo bike definately beats the car. In fact, with an electric hub motor properly installed on a cargo bike, with the right batteries, you can finally trade in your car keys for a cargo bike, even in Southern California. Even if you keep your car, and don't drive it unless nessesary, you save tons of CO2, time, and money. That's why Cargo Biking is so popular in Portland, Amsterdam, and now Southern Cal. That's why we bought our first bike, and were amazed with what it could do, so much so that we decided to devote ourselves to promoting bike culture in Orange County, by being the first bike shop ever to carry a large selection of Cargo Bikes all under one roof.

We're not just cyclists, but surfers. We first found cargo bikes, while searching for a better bike to carry our boards, beach stuff, and daughter, down to the break, down steep hills. We found absolutely nothing in Orange County, but found our first Bafiets, Box bike, online. We ordered, and went through a long process of assembling it, changing components, and making it our own. My husband, Richard, raced bikes in his twenties, and is the gearhead in the family. He knew exactly how he could make the bakfiet more surfboard friendly. The only surfboard trailer available is wobbly, and the company is out of business, no longer making them. Cargo Bikes have alot of potential in the surfboard carrying realm. Especially in San Clemente, where two friends can ride in one cargo bike to out of the way surf spots accessible only by foot, or bike, with boards, wetsuits, and a cooler. What you can do with these bikes is entirely up to your imagination, since they go where no car has gone before...

We're starting small with our new shop, but we hope to grow from our little hole in the wall place on Surf shop row in San Clemente, or maybe not...sometimes small is better! I will post info on the Grand Opening BBQ when we know we are really ready, so come stop by then!
